French Riviera Restaurant and Dining Reviews

Le Voilier, St Laurent du Var

Le Voiler is one of the liveliest bar restaurants in St Laurant du Var. It makes good use of its large outdoor terrace and its promenade position makes it a magnet for  drinkers and diners, creating a great party atmosphere.

Patio heaters make it comfortable for lunch or early evening cocktails throughout the year and it has to be said that the margaritas at Le Voiler are pretty damn good. The menu offers a great choice of Lebanese dishes and Mexican fajitas as well as more traditional fare like pizzas and moules. We ordered moules au curry, pizza cannibale, pizza Nissarta - a Nice speciality - and pizza vegitarienne.

The pizza crust was a bit thicker than usual but nonetheless crispy and light and all the toppings were very generous. However, the artichoke tasted woody on the pizza vegitarienne and had to be left. The moules were fine, except for the sprinkling of curry powder across the top which hadn't been  mixed into the sauce. Eating curry powder is not an enjoyable experience!

Overall, the service was speedy and efficient and the place is clearly popular with lunchtime diners who like a sea view. Buzzy and friendly, the bill came in at €65 for four people, including one course, a carafe of wine and soft drinks. Not bad!

Nice's famous Promenade des Anglais is home to a plethora of seafront restaurants, ranging from budget options to something a little more refined.

The 'Terres de Truffes' restaurant in Vieux Nice is the place to go for truffles, especially if it's your first time sampling a delicacy that's as French as escargots.

I can't claim any credit for this "find". The laurels must go to Gayle Roberts (of Nice Pebbles), who spent a night in our mountain idyll,
