French Riviera Restaurant and Dining Reviews

Life's Still a Beach at Le Sweet

We're getting close to the end of the beach restaurant season on the Cote d'Azur, so here's one last review for 2009. Le Sweet in Mandelieu is perfect for the mid-October diner as it gives you the option of eating in its covered restaurant or right on the beach. Both are excellent and it's nice to have this choice when the seasons are changing. Le Sweet is also close to the Parc Departmental San Peyre, so if the beach looks uninviting you can take a pre-meal stroll along a choice of routes, the more challenging of which overlook the Bay of Cannes.

As with all Cote d'Azur beach restaurants, there's a varied and interesting fish menu at Le Sweet, which changes depending on what was available at the market that morning. Fabulous gambas, dorade and sea bass all feature regularly at prices that are lower than in nearby Cannes. Le Sweet also does excellent salads, served as both starters and main course. Try the tempura, gambas or red fruit salads, all good and don't worry, there are carnivore options as well!

The wine list is decent, with a range of roses, including a good Bandol and service is attentive with no one pressing you to move on after your meal. If it's warm enough, you can just dawdle down to a lounger, where drinks will continue to be served, if required.

In fact, October is a good time to visit a restaurant like Le Sweet because at the height of summer the heat and crowds can detract from what should be a relaxing meal. Give it a try but take a jumper!
