Classically trained musicians Trio Butterfly help FR2DAY launch in style

Trio Butterfly is a musical troupe with a difference and the guests at FR2DAY's launch party experienced their talent first hand on Wednesday evening when they had a private audience with them. The glamorous trio set up in the street outside our venue Le Sun 7 in Cannes and received a rapturous reception from around 200 revellers as they played a medley of fantastic tunes.

In an area where the live music scene is predominantly ruled by men, listening to Sophie, Sophie and Nathalie play makes a refreshing change.

A violinist, a double bass player and an accordionist, they formed Trio Butterfly nine years ago and have a busy diary, entertaining at cocktail parties, weddings, bar mitzvahs and celebrations all over the South of France. Their style is ‘strolling,'an intimate performance inspired by Russian musicians at the beginning of the century which involves playing up close to tables of diners and taking requests.

Violinist Sophie Allain, who spent ten years living in Sweden and Denmark, started playing with other street musicians when she met accordionist Nathalie Lane and the pair formed their trio with double bassist Sophie Desvergnes. ‘We all got along together straight away,' says Sophie. ‘We played on the street with other musicians. I never thought I'd play as a professional but the other musicians looked after us. When we are playing, people can feel our energy. Sometimes they start to cry when we are playing a piece of music they love. And I think they love the fact that we are women.'

The trio play all sorts of music, from classical to Lebanese to gypsy to folk to traditional Jewish music through to French favourites such as Edith Piaf and they will travel far and wide to performances at all kinds of venues from chateaux to garden parties. ‘We played one gig for nine people at a dinner party in South West France, we will go anywhere people want us to go and are particularly thrilled to be celebrating such an exciting new venture with FR2DAY,' added Sophie.

As well as organising Trio Butterfly's engagements, Sophie is also promoting fellow artists in the area. ‘There is a lot of talent here and over the last few years, I have built up a portfolio of great people including caricaturists, party scene painters and musicians,' she says. ‘I can recommend other artists to people who are planning parties or celebrations and help them make their night really special.'
