Bardot’s shock poster for Cannes festival attacks the fur trade

Brigitte Bardot is the all-time star of Cannes, and her appearances at festivals in the 50's and 60's still set the standard for all the aspiring starlets. She's a local girl, based in St Tropez, she is also one of the most explosively sexual stars ever to hit the big screen. Her appearance in "And God Created Woman" is one of the iconic cinema moments. Now Bardot is taking on the fur trade with a shocking poster that exploits her Cannes credentials.

The poster says - "The Cinema has its Cannes festival; fashion has it's idiots' festival. Every year more than 50 million animals are killed just for their fur". The pun is Cannes and "connes" - an obscenity that is best translated by idiot or ass hole - even if the literal translation is even more obscene.

Bardot says, "I wanted to release this poster because Cannes is associated with fine clothes and glitter, but sadly that is all too often linked to cruelty and unnecessary luxury. As well as playing in films, actresses also act as fashion models in French society and all too often we see fur being worn on screen or on the red carpet. This means it is commonplace to see pelts of animals that have been skinned; electrocuted, gassed; or beaten to death in coats, jackets, and accessories.

The most imaginative designers don't need to use stone-age tactics to demonstrate their talent. Synthetic fur is now just as good as real fur, and animals are not hurt in its production. 85% of the animals that are killed for their fur come from factory farms where they are kept in conditions that are against their basic needs. More and more fur is coming from China, where there are no animal rights to protect them from cruelty and where there is plenty of documented evidence of animals being skinned alive."

So if you are planning a stroll around St Tropez, make sure you don't go anywhere near BB's house if you have a fur coat! God created woman, but he also created furry animals!
