Nice Christmas Market - A Bit of Old Russia

No Aliens haven't landed - it's the annual Christmas Market in Nice and this year the theme is Mother Russia. Yes, there's everything from a miniature Russian Church to loud Cossack music blaring from elevated speakers. Shut your eyes and you could be in Moscow. Well, the Ukraine, anyway. There are three chalets with Russian ‘exhibits' to visit, surrounded by white Christmas trees and more snow than Isola 2000. All very wintry. Even the Place Massena 'Buddhas' look cold.

This year, there are sixty chalets, selling everything from jewellery and winter hats to cheese and churros. US Singer Usher might think perfume from Monte Carlo is the thing but some of us know how important it is to find something ‘different' to give for Christmas. Nice market has lots on offer for the loveable artistic gift-giving chap. How about some jewellery made out of recycled tin? She'll feel like she's won the lottery.

The market in Nice, like many other Christmas events on the coast, is a bit of a tradition. It's great for kids, from the cheery stall holders and random Santas (I saw one selling dodgy Rolexes) to the ice rink that struggles to say frozen in the Riviera sunshine. There's also a playground with bouncy castles.

The best bit though is big wheel. Great views over Nice and back towards the Alpes Maritimes ski stations. It's amazing how being suspended 150 metres in the air can clear the mind. Wrap up well though, especially at night - the air up there is positively St Petersburg.
