Shop Till You Drop at Galeries Lafayette and then Grab yourself a Cupcake at Virgin Megastore

Shopping on Jean Medecin in Nice is tiring at the best of times - so once you've trawled around Mango, Sephora and Galeries Lafayette, why not head into Virgin Megastore and seek out some cupcakes.

No, I don't mean the slang term used by American teenagers to describe cozying up to your loved one. I'm talking about small cakes, also fondly referred to as fairy cakes: designed to serve one person, frosted or filled with every imaginable flavor. From chocolate or vanilla classics topped with butter-cream frosting to the absolutely off-the-wall specialty cupcakes like "The Mojito" -a rum soaked cupcake with sugar cane lime frosting and fresh mint! A great way to beat shopping stress!

Cupcake mania is worldwide, so where can you get your fix on the Riviera? Well, I discovered Scrumptious and Cupcakes Blvd - both personal and bespoke cupcake services which cater for those special occasions - but for an actual cupcakery that sells these little treats on a daily shopoholic basis you have to go to the Virgin Café at the megastore in Nice. It's here that artsy, 22 year old Julie Boucherat sells her very own home-baked cupcakes.

Julie stumbled onto her venture by accident when Virgin café supervisor Sophie Bruley thought it would be a great idea to introduce cupcakes in-store but could not find a single supplier in France! Luckily for her, Julie had a great recipe for cupcakes - something which she picked up in the UK, from her days of working as an au-pair.

She's only been baking these yummy little treasures for two months but she has already had to turn away disappointed shoppers after her cupcakes selling out for the day! Cupcake mania! She's on the 'cupcake cutting-edge' as well - experimenting with flavours. Her current list includes Choco-coco, Chocolate, Strawberry, Raspberry, and Vanilla. My favourite is the Choco-coco, a delightfully light chocolate cupcake topped with butter cream frosting and coconut shavings. For a reasonably priced € 2,10 per cake - it's worth every centime!

It's a simple pleasure and a welcome relief from your 'shop till you drop' activities. Next time you're in Virgin Megastore, head up to the Virgin café (first floor), grab yourself a window seat and savour each bite whilst sipping your cappuccino and gazing out onto the bustling tramway of Nice.

You'll be completely forgiven for being distracted off the street by the pretty colours and exotic scents emanating from Sephora's kaleidoscopic display.

Mango, the Spanish fashion chain, opens on Avenue Jean-Médecin in Nice this Saturday, 5th December.
