Madonna, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and the Côte d'Azur

Take out your cameras and get snapping: the paparazzi have been going crazy for a week now as the "Material girl" is shooting scenes for her new directed-movie "W.E." on the Riviera. W.E, which stands for the initials of Wallis and Edward, centers on the late British monarch King Edward VIII and his decision to abdicate the throne out of love for an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson.
It tells two parallel love stories separated by more than six decades. In the first one, Abbie Cornish stars as Wally Winthrop, a young married New Yorker in 1998 who is obsessed with what she perceives as the ultimate romantic love story while the second one follows the romance of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, played respectively by Andrea Riseborough and James D'Arcy.

According to Nice Matin, Madonna has already filmed a few scenes at the Palm Beach and in the beautiful gardens of the Domergue Villa in Cannes on July 29. One of these scenes is Wallis and Edward's wedding dinner. The star reportedly fell in love with the place which belonged to world famous painter Jean-Gabriel Domergue and his wife, Odette Maudrange-Domergue, during the last Cannes Film Festival.
The following day, Madonna went to Villefranche-Sur-Mer, where she was seen filming on a yacht, which may be a stand in for the Nahlin (pictured below), the royal vessel Edward used to take his lover on a cruise around Eastern Europe after he ascended the throne in 1936.

The pop diva also shot a few scenes on the port, including one where Wallis and Edward are getting out of their boat to head towards the old town, which has been redecorated for the occasion to represent the Portofino of the 1930's.
After a break in Paris where she filmed a few sequences for her movie near the rue de Rivoli, Madonna is now back on the Riviera for some more action before heading to England to wrap-up the movie.
W. E. should be released in 2011. Let's hope for Madge that it will do better than her first directed movie, the comedy Filth And Wisdom, which opened to mixed reviews at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2008 and tanked at the box office.
