Jill Barber Sings for her Supper

Canadian Jazz star Jill Barber is playing at the Red Radish Supper Club in Chateauneuf de Grasse on January 20th. Jill is bringing her beautiful songs and languid delivery to France before starting another of her increasingly successful tours and this special, invitation only event is a real coup for the organizers, @Wayne Brown and @Louise Bird who just happen to be friends with Jill and her husband, CBC presenter and successful author Grant Lawrence.
Her voice has been likened to Edith Piaf, Patsy Cline, and Billie Holiday. Hmm, well maybe, but really she's a one-off: it's the sound of aching desire and cool jazzy control all tied up in a honey-flavoured seductive delivery.
So much for the voice, but for me Jill's true greatness lies in her songwriting. Her lyrics are imaginative and funny. She finds great images and links them beautifully with the melodies. Check out "Measures and Scales" for a hilarious and lustful paean to a fling with a guy playing the piano in a jazz band. Her song "Starting to Show" is a very fine homage to infatuation.
In her most recent album, "Mischevious Moon", Jill has a very strong backing band, with sumptuous orchestration giving the songs a fuller sound. She claims she was looking for the kind of sound you get in a James Bond theme song.
We first met Jill at MIDEM in Cannes last year - where she gave a great show. If the event on January 20th is anything like as good as that one, it's going to be one of the mythical events of the Riviera.
