Some of Music’s Biggest Names Pay Tribute to Serge Gainsbourg on his Son’s First Album

Last Monday, Lulu Gainsbourg, released a tribute album to his late father, singer/songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, ‘From Gainsbourg to Lulu', in which he revives, with a touch of originality, some of the French icon's most famous hits. He is joined in his effort by a team of high profile international artists. A feat that is not that surprising. After all, with over 200 songs recorded by everyone from Petula Clark to Isabelle Adjani, the 'great Serge' reached an audience that spanned generations and borders.
Among those prestigious guests, Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp reprise 'La Ballade de Melody Nelson' while Sly Johnson sings ‘Couleur Café', Iggy Pop 'Initials BB', Rufus Wainwright 'Je Suis Venu te Dire' and Marianne Faithfull 'Manon'. The album also features actress Scarlett Johansson who joins Lulu for a sultry new rendition of the famed artist's 1968 hit, 'Bonnie & Clyde'. Based on a poem by the famous American criminal Bonnie Parker, the song was originally recorded in 1968 by Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot. This time, Johansson sings in English, while Lulu takes the place of his father to deliver the French lyrics.

Lucien Gainsbourg, aka Lulu Gainsbourg, was only 5 when he lost his father in 1991. He started piano at a very young age and recorded a duet with his mother, model and singer Bambou, of a song called 'Ne Dis Rien' (written, composed, and sung by his father) when he was only 15.
Since 2007, he has been studying film scoring, contemporary writing and production at Berklee College of Music in Boston in order to follow in his father's footsteps. This album is a wonderful homage to a father he barely got to know and fans will without doubt be delighted by this international effort.
However, for those who cannot get enough of Serge Gainsbourg, they can also rush to buy 'Histoire De Melody Nelson', the classic 1971 album, which has been recently reissued as new Deluxe and Super Deluxe Editions, to include a number of previously unreleased tracks and a DVD featuring an exclusive documentary. The album, which is widely considered to be one of Gainsbourg's most influential pieces of work, is a concept album recorded that tells the story of a young English girl who meets a 40-year-old French man. It features a mixture of guitar music, psychedelic pop and orchestral arrangements blended with the voice of Gainsbourg's longtime partner Jane Birkin.
