Chill at La Bastide Saint Christophe

Le Bar sur Loup is a picturesque Riviera back-country village on the road between Vence and Grasse. It's one of those places you easily pass by - meaning it's off the main tourist track and has managed to ‘retain charm'. La Bastide Saint Christophe compliments it perfectly. Simple, stylish old world Provencal apartments, set in an olive grove, with stunning hillside views. If you are looking for a place to chill, this is it.

La Bastide has a book bulging with testimonials from happy guests and it's easy to see why. The owners have managed to achieve an alchemic combination of comfort and Provencal ambience at fair prices. Some similar establishments further towards the coast should hang their heads in shame. The apartments are stylishly furnished, in a traditional way and include thoughtful touches like DVD players with access to a film collection. More importantly La Bastide Saint Christophe has a fabulous pool set against panoramic hillside views.

The nearby village of Le Bar sur Loup is 45 minutes from Nice airport, close to Grasse and Cannes. It has good restaurants, including La Jarrerie and Ecole des Filles (no, not a Riviera version of London's infamous ‘School Dinners' club) - and if you feel like a bit of FR2DAY film location hunting, you can spot parts of the area around the village in Hitchcock's ‘To Catch a Thief', with Carey Grant and Grace Kelly. Actually - which part of the Côte d'Azur wasn't a location for ‘To Catch a Thief'?!

We sometimes feel a tinge of guilt promoting the Riviera ‘back country' - no one wants to see it overrun with tourists. But places like La Bastide Saint Christophe deserve to succeed. Because they actually care about giving visitors a genuine, affordable South of France experience. Something worth celebrating.
