What's On Round-up - Remembering the Poilus this Friday

Today (Friday) is Veterans' Day in France. Also known as "le onze novembre" or the "Armistice", the country commemorates the end of World War I. The last French veteran, ('poilu'), Lazare Ponticelli, may have died at the age of 110 in 2008, but that is no reason to forget all those who participated in and/or died for our freedom during the Great War. Ceremonies will be held in most cities and villages throughout the day. However, if you do not want to focus too much on the past, there will also be many fun events organized over the next seven days.

This weekend, all the region's gourmets and lovers of French food will be at the Hippodrome de la Côte d'Azur in Cagnes-sur-Mer, which is hosting the 20th "salon du Palais Gourmand" until Monday. Created in 1992, the trade fair has become over the years one of the top five salons in France for this sector of activity and allows visitors to embark on a real gastronomic Tour de France.

This month, the French Riviera is hosting chestnut festivals all along the coast, and this Saturday it is going to be the turn of Cagnes-sur-Mer to celebrate the reddish-brown nuts with a fun programme that includes plenty of music and tastings of local products.

Back to Broadway!

Fans of musicals will not want to miss Back to Broadway! Wine Women & Song!, a fabulous gastro-musical evening combining great food and wine with a magical toe tapping show featuring the timeless classics of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time. The event takes place at 7pm on Saturday  at The Grange in Mouans Sartoux.

A few days later, on Wednesday, one of France's most popular artists, Charles Aznavour, will take the stage of the Palais Nikaïa in Nice for what should be an amazing show.

Every year in November, La Gaude organizes its annual 'Jazz sous les Bigaradiers' festival. Held from the 14th to the 21st, this nationally renowned event has established itself as one of the region's major jazz events. Géraldine Laurent and the Time Out Trio, Pierre Bertrand, Minino Garay, Louis Winsberg, Alfio Origlio and Jérome Regard are some of the musicians who will be performing at this 15th edition.

On Sunday at 3pm and Wednesday at 8pm, the Opéra de Monte Carlo will present Mefistofele at the Grimaldi Forum, Arrigo Boito's version of the famed Goethe's story of Faust and his pact with the devil.

If you are in Menton, you may want to check out the brand new museum, the Jean Cocteau Museum - Séverin Wunderman Collection which opened last weekend. In addition to more than 2,000 works from the multi-talented French artist, the striking building also hosts a temporary exhibition, running until May 2012, dedicated to Jean Sabrier, a Bordeaux based artist, who gives new perspectives to paintings through art history.

Over at Galerie Oscar in Nice, the exhibition featuring the works of Swedish artist Marita Occelli is coming to an end tonight. However, the second exhibition entitled Diamonds in the Dark featuring Australian artist Mesha Sendyk's contemplative works continues until the end of the month.

L'Histoire du Mariage Princier exhibition in Monaco

If you enjoyed the July nuptials of Prince Albert II and Charlene Wittstock, you just have a few more weeks to see the exhibit presented by French journalist and royal correspondent Stéphane Bern at Monaco's Oceanographic Museum, l'Histoire du Mariage Princier. The exhibitions centers around objects such as previously unpublished photographs, the official invitations, the presents given by the Monegasques to their sovereigns and the Armani wedding dress.

On the sporting front, the annual No Finish Line charity event is back this Saturday in Port Hercule in Monaco, running from Saturday 12th November to Sunday 20th November. Organized by the Children & Future Association who help sick and disadvantaged youth, this is a great way to get some exercise while raising money for charity in a festive atmosphere!
